Integrating Displays with APIs, Databases, Sensors, and Platforms
A typical operational display system has several layers: a data source (property management system, queue management, production database, sensor feed), a middleware or integration layer (API gateway, ETL, or custom service), and the display application itself. The display may also talk to a content or device management system for scheduling, access control, or remote configuration. Each boundary is a potential point of failure and a place where responsibility must be defined.
We design integration with clear contracts: what data is available, in what format, at what frequency, and with what guarantees. We do not assume that upstream systems are always available or always correct. We specify timeouts, retries, fallbacks, and staleness handling. The display application must behave predictably when the API is slow, the database is down, or the network is intermittent.
Data Flow and System Boundaries
Data flow is unidirectional in the simplest case: source to middleware to display. In practice, there may be multiple sources (e.g. room status from one API, queue data from another), caching layers, and conditional logic. We map data flow explicitly. Each system has a boundary: what it owns, what it consumes, and what it exposes. That clarity is essential for debugging and for assigning responsibility when something goes wrong.
System boundaries also define where we stop. We do not own the property management system or the queue engine; we consume their data. We do own (or co-own) the integration layer and the display application: the logic that fetches, transforms, and presents data. When the source is wrong, we can only display what we receive; when our layer is wrong, we fix it.
Failure Modes and Responsibility
Failures can occur at any boundary. The API may return errors or time out. The network may drop. The display device may restart. The middleware may crash. We design for failure by defining expected behaviour at each point: if the API is unavailable, the display shows cached data with a staleness indicator (or a defined fallback). If the display restarts, it recovers state from cache or re-fetches. Responsibility boundaries answer: who fixes what? We document these in integration specifications and operational runbooks.
Integration Failure Modes
Common integration failure modes include: API timeout or unreachable source (display must show defined fallback or staleness); network partition (display may show last-known-good or error state); wrong or changed API contract (integration layer must be updated; display must not corrupt); source returns bad data (display shows what it receives unless validation is in scope). We specify which failure modes are in scope and how each is handled so that behaviour is explicit and debuggable.
